The immune system, a group of cells, molecules and tissues, protects us against disease and other invadors such as bacteria, viruses and cancer cells. The immune system is most important in maintaining optimum health. A healthy immune system can meet all challenges.

But, staying healthy today can be very difficult. The body has to continually fight against the invasion of free radicals — oxygen molecules that have lost an electron and have become unpaired. They are highly reactive and can bind to healthy cells, causing a chain reaction of destruction to the body.

Although the majority of free radicals are formed in the body, they can also be derived from external sources which adds to the existing load. Free radicals are formed by exposure to air pollution, tobacco smoke, insecticides, radiation and chemicals (cleaners: chlorine, new carpet, air freshners, etc.) both at home and at work.

Other sources of free radicals are food additives and preservatives, alcohol, a high fat diet (fried and barbequed foods) and even excessive sunlight and exercise. These sources of free radical production should concern us the most as they cause the excessive and uncontrolled free radicals which can have devastating health effects.

When combined, oxygen and oxidation is the major source of free radical damage both internally and externally. For example, they cause paint to oxidize, steel to rust, rubber to harden and crack, and cement to become porous. In the body, free radicals have been linked to many age-related diseases including cancer, heart attack, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, cataracts, asthma and Alzheimer's disease.
