One way to maintain your digestive health is to consume enough nutritious food and enzymes. Enzymes are essential to good health because they transform food into nutrients. They are the sparks that speed up the chemical reactions our bodies need to live.

Enzymes are necessary for providing cellular energy, for repairing all tissues, organs and cells, for stimulating the brain and for digesting food. This includes the absorption, transportation and metabolism of nutrients as well as the elimination of waste.

During the 1920's, Edward Howell, MD theorized that we are born with a limited supply of enzyme energy which is up to us to replenish to ensure vitality. Also, research shows that as we age our enzyme production is reduced. Therefore, we run the risk of ill health if we do not constantly replenish our body's supply.

Dr. Howell's theory became more popular as the Western diet became more dependent on cooked and processed foods. Enzymes are extremely heat sensitive and are destroyed when cooked above 118 degrees F., Pasturized, canned or microwaved foods contain few, if any, enzymes which means that the typical diet is enzyme-deficient.

Nutritional studies have shown that a regular diet of cooked and canned foods causes the development of chronic degenerative diseases. This points back to the importance of eating raw fruits and vegetables. Only raw foods have functional "live" enzymes. And, the more raw foods you eat, the more live enzymes you get.
