There are 206 bones in the adult body. Along with cartilage, those bones comprise the entire skeletal system and their strength is imperative to good health. Proper bone density is dependant upon adequate amounts of calcium — the most abundant mineral in the human body.

Over 99% of calcium is stored in the bones and teeth. Study data suggests that over 79% of American diets don't contain the daily required amount of calcium. Strict vegetarians or the lactose intolerant are often at risk since many sources of calcium are excluded from either diet.

Most Americans don't get the daily requirement of calcium as most unhealthy diets lack a sufficient amount of the primary food sources for calcium like dairy products, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, sardines, etc. The list of severe complications caused by calcium deficiency is considerable.

Calcium deficiency (also known as hypocalcemia) can cause an abnormal heartbeat, muscle pain and cramps, numbness, stiffness and tingling of the hands and feet, fractures and osteoporosis (bone loss). Children can suffer from bone deformities and growth retardation. When your diet lacks a sufficient amount of calcium, you are putting your health at risk.

Calcium deficiency concerns all ages and not just those over 60. The Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, says that the Dietary Reference Intakes (RDI) are actually higher for ages 9 to 18 than from age 51 and older. Osteoporosis can begin to affect children as young as 12, proving that adequate calcium intake is very important.
