Lifestyle is a major factor in heart disease the #1 cause of death in North America. The lifestyle factors are a poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking. A lifestyle change and supplementing with alpine wild garlic can help to maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
AIM Bear Paw Garlic® is unique. It is not derived from Allium sativum, the common species of garlic sold in supermarkets and used in garlic supplements. Rather, it is made from Allium ursinum, a wild species which grows in the alpine regions of central Europe, particularly Switzerland.
The name "Bear Paw" comes from the claim that bears eat wild garlic to regain strength after awakening from their winter hibernation. "Ursinum is Latin for "bear." The bulbs, which are much smaller than A. sativum, are left in the earth to ensure future supply. The active substances in A. ursinum are not found in the bulbs, but in the leaves.
Bear Paw is largely unknown in the U.S. But, in 1989, the German health journal called it "the new star" of garlic. In 1992, the Association for the Protection and Research on European Medicinal Plants declared A. ursinum the European medicinal "Plant of the Year."
Garlic has a history as a healthful plant having been used medicinally from as early as 3000 BC. Both A. ursinum and A. sativum contain sulfur compounds, amino acids, minerals (germanium, selenium and zinc), and vitamins A, B and C. Both contain the compound allicin, believed to be responsible for most of its benefits and unique aroma.
